IT’S CALLED G.O.O.D MUSIC FOR A REASON.
Often in the music world there are these showcases that offer a closer look to some of the new/potential talent labels are releasing. Showcase after showcase many of them are straight wack and we (the audience) are left with a disgusting taste in our mouth and a feeling like “damn, I spent like 50 bucks on liquor, I got work in the morning and that shit was wack. I’m tight!” But for 1st time in a very longtime, I went to a showcase and left with the refreshing taste of satisfaction.
Let me tell you about this thing called G.O.O.D Music…
The night began with 88 keys, known mostly for his skills as a producer, but as of late he’s jumped out of his comfort zone by doing a bit of MC-ing (be on the lookout for his new album - The Death of Adam, dropping this October). The crowd wasn’t really feeling him too much, but what he lacked in stage performance, he made up with humor. He tossed in many jokes during his set, maybe a lil too much for a music concert; almost losing the crowd completely, but quickly bought the crowd up to about a level 3 when he walked off and returned in a Kanye look-a-like out fit - Glasses, scarf, bubble vest and all he even did the neck jerkin back spasm dance ye does (see: Mr. West in the “Gold Digger video).
After waiting 20 minutes Termanology blessed the stage and gave a good performance - straight rhyming, no antics, no shinny suits, no –t-pain effect… just a t-shirt, jeans and two of his henchmen rhyming they even broke into “freestyles”. It wasn’t anything ground breaking but nice to know people still do that.
Crowd energy: Level 5 - We’re making progress.
Another 20 minutes go by and the crowd is getting restless. Playing hostess and crowd control, Jen The Pen, comes out and tells the audience everything is going to be alright., “We have Big Sean, Mickey Factz …” as soon as the words Mickey Factz left her mouth the rowdy restless crowd, repeatedly yells “Who the fuck is a Mickey Factz?!“ Those words would soon become crowd chants.
Minutes later Big Sean made his way to the stage and performed his songs, now the crowd is at level 6. No 20 minute wait this time, Mickey Factz comes out in a
d ramatic fashion, lights off dressed in all black with a motorcycle helmet on his head (SMH). The beat drops and he bust out into some kind of weird 1990’s MC hammer/Steve Urkel type dance and the crowd loves every second of it. It is clear that Factz is influenced by rock and roll, his performance was equipped with a band and a obscene amount of jumping and rolling around on the floor demonstrating his passion for the music. Oh yea, remember those hecklers earlier? Factz let ’em know who he is as he replied “To hell with the heckler, somebody put a tomato in his mouth…. I’m Lupe’s evil twin brother”. A great performance all in all bringing the crowd to level 8 and we’re not even ready for the headliner yet!
There goes that 20 minute wait again, the crowd slowly dying down from its level 8 energy. But, it seems like the next performer is what everybody came out on a Tuesday night for. Jen The Pen comes out again and introduces Kid Cudi and the crowd flips
the f*ck out! I mean straight through the roof energy from a NYC crowd! The hardest place to please people and dude is from Cleveland! He loves it and gives everything he has, pouring his heart and soul into this show. This was my first time hearing Kid Cudi and I immediately felt the need to hear more of his music (go download A Kid Named Cudi right now if you haven’t already.) His style is very unique, through out the night I was trying to put him in a category but I couldn’t. The closest I came up with was a mix of Kanye and Gnarls Barkley, very different from any rappers out right now. This dude is a poet!
But back to the show now the crowd is at level 10. We are ready for the headliner - Consequence but instead we got Statik Selektah spinning a few classics and exclusives in other words buying time. That really was a bad move ‘cause we were at level 10 and that brought everyone back down to chill mood level 7.
Finally Cons comes out to “The Good The Bad, The Ugly” and the crowd goes up to level 9 but once that was done its was back to level 7.
That is until Ye comes jumps on stage and sets the Knitting Factory on fire. Performing a number of joints
with Consequence and a few solo joints including, his new song “Love Lockdown”, which was received by the crowd very well and his verse from “Put On”. Just when we thought it couldn’t get any louder, the show gets turned on its ear by a dope ass guest appearance from none other than Q-tip performing a few ATCQ classics as well as his new track “Gettin’ Up” to absolutely send The Knitting Factory to orbit! Now we are at level 15 and I thought we could only go to 10.
