MURDA MAMI #1
Mixtape queen, DJ Lazy K continues to take the industry by storm.
With everyone and their mama jumping on turntables and flooding the music industry, DJ Lazy K emerges as one of the few street sweepers talented enough to make the shift from behind the scenes to the spotlight. The turntable veteran behind the Best of Dipset mixtape (that featured the infamous Jay-Z diss) among many other memorable classics of past and present grew up mesmerized by rap, graffiti and break dancing.
A truly diverse background, with origins including Switzerland and France; the hispanic, multi-lingual and self-proclaimed Queen of Mixtapes brings an international flair to the culture that inspired her as a child. Practicing on other DeeJays’ equipment and filling in as they took breaks, she gradually turned a hobby into a promising career as one of the most heavily sought after and well respected DJ’s in the industry, male or female.
This respect, she says, was established after years of working hard, nurturing her passion for music and honing her turntable skills—no short skirts or tight dresses necessary. Though like most female DJs or emcees her “experience coming in the game was rough,” she refused to use her body to get in the door of the mixtape world. In baggy jeans and baseball caps, Lazy K opted to let her music speak for itself and that, she believes, has been her staying power. “Females being fast to get on the TV or radio, there’s no longevity there… Everything that comes easy, it goes easy.” With a rap sheet that boasts over 100 mixtapes and almost fourteen years in the game under her belt, the mixtape Queen is poised to reign long after everyone else’s fifteen minutes are up. No stranger to that initial hustle though, DJ Lazy K is determined not to forget her girls as she soars to the top. “As long as I’m here, I’m gonna be one of the females that help other females get in.” Enter Murda Mami: the movement: featuring such female heavyweights as Remy Martin of Terror Squad, Lala from MTV, Shawna of Disturbing Tha Peace, Rah Digga of Flip Mode Squad and a host of other female DJs, singers and models on the come up, Murda Mami was designed to increase and secure a feminine presence in a male-dominated hip hop industry. With a Murda Mami mixtape in the making, DJ Lazy K promises that her team is a force soon to be reckoned with. One thing’s for certain: with DJ Lazy K in the driver’s seat, female hip-hop heads will get the direction they need to take the industry by storm.
